New Squash Coach – Gyanendra Singh

Squash Yukon is pleased to announce that Gyanendra Singh has just begun as a squash coach in Whitehorse.  This is the first full-time coach that has been hired in 3 years, and signals Squash Yukon’s goal to reinvigorate the sport of squash in the Yukon.  

Gyanendra Singh has a great passion for the sport of squash.  He has a Masters in Physical

Education and Sports Sciences, with a specialization in sports biomechanics.  Gyanendra has been playing squash for more than 20 years, including competitively at the national level in India.  He has more than 10 years of coaching experience in India and Kuwait, and is certified with the World Squash Federation and Asian Squash Federation. He arrived in the territory from Delhi, India and has completed his self-isolation. 

Squash Yukon is looking to grow interest and participation in squash in Yukon at all levels and ages, and developing the skills of players.  

Stay tuned for program offerings such as clinics, private and semi-private coaching, outreach to schools and communities when possible, and the growth of a more extensive junior program, both competitive and non-competitive.  He will also be coordinating Tuesday and Thursday leagues, and once possible, tournaments.  Gyanendra will be sourcing squash equipment for sale, and plans to provide racquet stringing services. 

Gyanendra is very excited to be in Yukon, and is very interested in getting to know new people and explore the outdoors.  

Background

Squash Yukon has an approved COVID-19 Return to Play that has enabled play with maximum two per court and additional COVID-related controls. 

There are currently three operational squash courts but in Whitehorse, located at Better Bodies in Whitehorse.  There are two courts in the Watson Lake Recreation Center and one in Faro. 

Squash Yukon receives support from Sport Yukon through Yukon Sport for Life and Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee. 

One of Gyanendra’s topics of research is a biomechanical analysis of the drop shot.

2017 Yukon Open                                                                                 30 March 2017

Join us in Whitehorse, Yukon for the 2017 Yukon Open, taking place May 3 – 7 at Better Bodies. Each player will be guaranteed a minimum of three matches.

2016/17 Junior Programming                                                             21 December 2016

Squash Yukon’s junior programming set two will be starting soon! Again, we have Cameron Webber and Jane Bell working with the Junior Development and Competitive groups.
Cameron has been playing squash for 22 years and was a sponsored athlete for 10 years. He has extensive international experience (US, Europe, Australia). Cameron was the Assistant Coach for the 2007 Canada Games Yukon Squash Team, Assistant Coach for the Saskatoon Junior Squash Program, a member of 1999 Canada Games Squash Team, and Squash Yukon’s Athlete of the Year 1999. His highest national ranking has been top 150.
Jane participated in both the 2003 and 2007 Canada Winter Games. Her top rank was third in Canada and she placed fifth at the US Open in 2008 ranking her ranked near 150 globally. Jane won the Alberta Open and Closed in 2008 and was accepted on to Team Alberta. In 2007 she moved to Calgary to play squash and train with the Canadian National Coach (Glenn Stark). Jane played on the National Women’s Team event as position one in Vancouver for a year, for team Yukon. Jane has a level one in coaching.

2016/17 Squash Yukon League                                                       1 September 2016

The 2016-2017 squash season is once again upon us and Squash Yukon is excited to provide Squash League.

Squash Yukon Leagues will run from October 25/27th 2016 through to May 2017 with Tuesday (Division 1) and Thursday (Division 2) night play. At the end of season play a league championship will take place to crown two Yukon champion teams. As in past years, there will be seven teams competing in each league with four or five players on each team. Play will take place at Better Bodies between 7pm and 9:30pm. The cost of eight months of play will be $140.

Squash Yukon will be organizing Box Ladder play for League participants through September. This will help us to better place players on teams, and to help players get out on the courts for the beginning of the season.

Please email squashyukon.league@gmail.com before September 2nd, 2016 to ensure we are able to organize our Box Ladder through the time leading up to League start of October 25/27th. There will also be sign-up sheets at the courts.
