Junior Squash Program 2026-2027

Whether you/your child is a squash fanatic or has never picked up a racquet, there’s a place for them in our junior program!

THE OVERVIEW:

  • Within the 2026-2027 season, there are two sessions:
    1. Fall session – September 7, 2026 to December 20, 2026 – sign-ups close early September
    2. Winter session – January 4, 2027 to April 29, 2027 –sign-ups close at the start of January
  • Each session consists of 15 weeks of practices and games
  • For each session, we are offering 5 different program levels to choose from, based on the junior’s age, experience level, and desired number of practices per week
  • There is one “Yukon-only” juniors tournament per session (total of 2 for the season)
  • There is one out of territory junior tournament per session (total of 2 for the season)
  • In addition to the tournaments above, there are two special tournaments this year:
    1. The Aurora Open – held in September in Whitehorse
    2. The Canada Winter Games – held in March in Quebec City

PROGRAM LEVELS

The first step is selecting which program level is right for the junior player.

We have five different junior program levels for the 2026-2027 season, summarized in the table below and described in the next section.

1 There are two sessions within in the season: 1 session in the fall (Sept-Dec), and 1 session in the winter (Jan – April)

PROGRAM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Squash Tots – Ages 3-5 (ST_3-5)

  • This is for our youngest aspiring squash players, looking to have fun running around a court!
  • Practice frequency: 1x/week
  • Practice time: Every Saturday from 10:15 am to 11:00 am
  • Price: $125 per 15 week session
  • Program focus: The most important thing in Squash Tots is for these youngsters to have fun! We want to have them be comfortable on the court, know our coaches and their potential squash friends, and have a positive association with the squash environment!
  • Note that parents/guardians are required to stay in the Better Bodies building while their child is participating in this program.

Learn to Play – Ages 6-8 (LTP_6-8)

  • Do you want to introduce your young child to squash? Is having your child play squash once a week best for your schedule? Then this is the program for you!
  • Practice frequency: 1x/week
  • Practice time: Every Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
  • Price: $200 per 15 week session
  • Program focus: First and foremost - having lots of fun on the court! Learning how to swing, basic rules, meeting other young/new squash players.

Learn to Play – Ages 9-14 (LTP_09-14)

  • Is your pre-teen/teenager wanting to try out squash? Does twice a week sound doable with their activity schedule? Then this is the program for you!
  • Practice frequency: 2x/week
  • Practice time: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
  • Price: $400 per 15 week session
  • Program focus: Learning the rules, how to swing and rally, and meeting other kids their age who are also getting into squash. This program prepares juniors to play squash confidently, in social or competitive environments.

Learn to Train– Ages 9-14 (LTT_09-14)

  • Is your young child really enjoying squash and wants to get better while having fun with their friends on-court? Then this is the program for you!
  • Practice frequency: 2x/week
  • Practice time: Every Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
  • Price: $400 per 15 week session
  • Program focus: Practicing swing and technique, learning game strategy, advancing skills so the junior could participate in tournaments, leagues, or other competitions in the future.

Learn to Compete – Ages 11-18 (LTC_11-18)

  • This is a competition stream for kids who want to train and compete!
  • Juniors in this program level are eligible to join the 2027 Canada Winter Games squad, who will travel to Quebec City, QC in early March 2027 to represent the Yukon. More details on the Canada Winter Games are provided in the “Tournaments” section of this document
  • Practice frequency: 3x/week
  • Practice time: Every Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and every Saturday from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
  • Price: $550 per 15 week session
  • Program focus: Advancing and refining swing and technique, practicing game strategy, advancing skills and understanding of sportsmanship for competition.

The tournaments listed below are the ones which Squash Yukon will be focusing on for this year’s junior program. Of course, there are many more junior tournaments across Canada. Squash Yukon can help your junior find those and plan to attend if they are interested!

Squash Yukon Junior Program Closed Tournaments

  • These tournaments are just for juniors in our junior program
  • These are 2-day tournaments (Friday-Saturday)
  • Coach Gyan will make sure that juniors are matched appropriately for some great competition, and great fun!
  • There are two junior closed tournaments for Squash Yukon this year:
    1. Fall tournament: November 20-21, 2026
    2. Winter tournament: February 5-6, 2027
  • Entry into these tournaments is included in your junior program fees

Out of Territory Travel Tournaments

  • These out of territory tournaments are where our juniors travel to a squash club outside of the Yukon to compete against junior squash players from across Canada.
  • This season, we are prioritizing Squash Yukon juniors attendance at these the following two tournaments:
    1. Alberta Jesters: November 6-8, 2026 in Edmonton, AB
    2. PNW Jesters: February 12-14, 2027 in Victoria, BC
  • Registration fees for the tournaments themselves is typically $100-$150 per junior entry
  • Travel and accommodation costs are additional. Squash Yukon has a set dollar amount we will provide per junior (typically $200-$400, exact allowance for 2026-2027 season to be announced in September 2026), and there may be other funding opportunities pursued to help with travel and accommodation. The remaining costs after these supports need to be covered by the junior/family/guardians/others.
  • Squash Yukon will coordinate chaperones for these tournaments, but we encourage you to be a part of your junior’s tournament experience at these neat locations!
  • Squash Yukon’s travel and accommodation supports and provision of chaperone above are dependent on a minimum of 5 juniors attending the out of territory tournament.
  • These tournaments are a fantastic adventure for our juniors – great competition, great team bonding, and a lot of fun!

Special Tournaments for 2026-2027 Season

  • We have two special tournaments this season for juniors, that are not a part of our typical junior tournament circuit:
    1. 2026 Aurora Junior Open
      • This is a national junior tournament, and we are hosting it in 2026 in Whitehorse!
      • This is a chance to showcase our skills and our squash community to juniors from across Canada
      • Dates: September 18-19, 2026
      • Entry Fee: $125
      • Includes Friday pizza, Saturday breakfast and lunch, tournament hoodie, tournament social event Saturday night
    2. 2027 Canada Winter Games
      • The Canada Winter Games happen once every 4 years, and this time it is being held in Quebec City, QC!
      • We are very excited to get a “CWG Squad” trained up for CWG 2027
      • Dates: March 8-14, 2027
      • Fees are TBD at this time, but we will be sure to communicate these as soon as we learn about them from the CWG committee
      • Once the squad has been formed, we will also be pursuing some travel funding to assist with the cost of heading across the country
